IntroductionLiterature can be interpreted as a source or reference used in various activities in the world of education or other activities. You can use it as a source of information. Literature includes books, poems, novels, plays, short stories and prose. There are some writings that do not qualify as literature. For example, it does not mean that they were written for information or to be checked, but rather, it was done with an artistic goal. Fiction (imaginative) is divided from non-fiction. Non-fictional literary works include biographies and autobiographies. Essays and criticism are examples of fiction.

The novel can be described as a narrative literary piece that is long and contains a number of stories about a single character and those around him. Each character is highlighted in terms of their character and nature. The novel can be an essay with intrinsic and extrinsic components. A novel’s story is more complicated and complex, it is longer than a short story, and the author may want to send a hidden message or moral value to its readers. Novels can be classified as fiction (fictional stories) or non-fiction (based upon true events). Each novel must contain both intrinsic and extrinsic components. Intrinsic elements include plots, themes, settings, characterizations, etc. The extrinsic element examples are the values of stories, biographies about researchers, etc.

Novels have themes, characters, and other intrinsic elements. The theme can be a basic idea, moral, or point of the story. The theme, or the main idea, of a fictional prose work, such as a novel, may include several subordinate ideas. We can say that the characters in a novel carry out the storyline. The protagonist or main characters is the character that becomes the center of the novel. Characterization, or how an author portrays a character’s personality, is closely linked to character. This analysis will use structural analysis to analyze the theme and characters in the novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban written by J.K. Rowling. NovelNovelA novel is a literary work with a narrative structure. The stories are about a single character and his or her life, while highlighting their character. Novels are divided into fiction and non-fiction. Most people prefer fictional novels. Eagleton said, “Most literature is factual but there are also many fictions that people enjoy.” Each novel has both intrinsic and external elements. Intrinsic elements include themes and characterizations.

The Latin word for theme means a device. The theme is what makes a story unique. Themes are the fundamental meaning or idea of a story. The author will convey the theme through the storyline. The story is not just a series of events arranged in a chart. It also has an intent. Themes define the content of an essay by defining the primary ideas. The subject of a novel or short story can be anything in the human world. The theme can be a problem relating to power, sympathy, jealousy or other issues. Rarely, the author will express the theme. The essay must be read in its entirety to understand the theme. The theme could have been deposited in the storyline, characters or symbols used by the author.

CharacterIrshad & Ahmed (2005) state that characters can be defined as figures who are given certain characteristics by the author and will then be revealed through their dialogues and actions. Characters play the role of actors in a story. Novels would not exist without characters. The characters will control the plot of a novel. Characters will describe themes, express their ideas and resolve conflict in their own way. Characters will not adapt to a story, but will instead create their story. Characters can be divided into supporting and main characters. There are also many different types of characters, including major character and minor character.

CharacterizationCharacterization is a representation of personality of the character in the story, it can be change, such as his view of life, his attitude, his beliefs, his customs, and so on. The character’s personality expressed as adjectives. Examples include: kind, lazy and evil. The words of the characters or the storylines can express these qualities. Characterization can be determined by the actions of a character in a story if the author’s words or those of another character do not express the personality. Characterization and characters are two different things. A character is an individual with traits and behaviors that experiences the story.

The novel theory is a theory that analyses literary works according to their structure. This theory employs an objective method that views autonomous literary works, independent of their authors and readers. The goal of structural analysis, is to reveal as much as possible the setting, and as deeply and as precisely as possible all the interconnections and links between literary works. The novel can also be analyzed using the close reading method.

Discussion of ResultsTheme The theme in the novel is that maintaining friendships is dependent on loyalty. All scenes are based on the idea of loyalty and friendliness. The relationship between Harry and Ron as well as Hermione is a good example. Harry potter discovered how important his friends were, as he and the others fought against a powerful enemy. It also talked about the relationship of Sirius Black, Remus, and James Potter. Remus Black and Sirius Black were always loyal to James Potter’s relationship. Peter Pettigrew, on the other hand, defected to Voldemort and conspired against James Potter and Lily Potter. Remus, Sirius and Black were still angry when they saw Peter Pettigrew again. He almost died. Sirius Black eventually became Harry Potter’s godfather, and he guarded him as Harry is James’ son.

Characters in NovelsAs we have already stated, characters in a novel are the actors. Novels would not exist without characters. The characters will control the plot of a novel. Harry Potter, the protagonist of this book is the main protagonist. Harry Potter’s presence in the novel from beginning to the end makes him the protagonist. He is the protagonist who battles against the antagonists (Voldemort). This character has a crucial role in the development the story. Conflict and plot revolves all around him. The character has a complex and round personality. In this novel, the supporting characters are Ron Weasley/Scabbers/Peter Pettigrew/Scabbers/Voldemort/Remus Black/Hagrid/Sirius Black/Hagrid/Albus Dumbledore/Severus Snape, etc. The supporting character are those who appear and mention in the plot but do not have the primary focus. Harry Potter is an example of a major character. Ron Weasley and Hermione are also examples. Major characters are important because they appear and are mentioned frequently. Sibyll Tralawney, Minerva Mcgonagall, Lucius Malfoy and Ginny Weasley are examples of minor characters. Minor characters are those who serve as a complement to the main character. They rarely appear in the story or are mentioned.

Characterization in NovelIn the following analysis, we will discuss the characterization in Harry Potter’s novel. His diligence is shown indirectly through actions. (“For example, he was eager to complete his homework but had to do so in secret in the middle of the night”) Harry Potter’s diligence can be proven by the fact that he does his homework in secret, even when her family forbids him. The author directly stated that Harry was a good Quidditcher, and the action of selecting him for a Hogwarts House team showed how smart he is. Harry Potter can be deemed smart in Quidditch if the author mentions it. He is also the youngest person ever to be chosen for the Hogwarts House teams. Through his bravery and lack of fear, he has proven to be a person who is not afraid. Harry Potter’s bravery can be proven by the fact that he is never able to escape Voldemort, and tries his best to defeat him. His persistence is shown indirectly through his actions. He works hard to learn Patronus Charm which is a spell most adults cannot perform. Harry Potter’s persistence can be proven by the fact that he tried everything to defeat Voldemort.
